What is PCE-CfD?

Kirklees NHS Talking Therapies provides a type of counselling called Person Centred Experiential Counselling for Depression, or PCE-CfD for short. This therapy is based on research and is designed for people dealing with depression.

It’s a flexible approach that combines ideas from Person-centred therapist Carl Rogers and elements from emotion-focused therapy (EFT). The key idea is to build a strong, trusting relationship with your therapist, creating a safe space where you can talk about your feelings and challenges.

PCE-CfD focuses on understanding the deep emotional issues behind depression, such as unresolved pain, inner conflicts, harsh self-criticism, overwhelming feelings, grief, and adjustments to life changes. This method encourages you to explore difficult emotions in a safe way. By doing this, it helps you grow emotionally, which can lead to relief from depression symptoms.

Overview of PCE-CfD therapy

Focus on emotions

PCE-CfD helps you to express and understand your emotions instead of ignoring them, addressing unresolved emotional pain associated with depression.

Therapeutic relationship

A safe and supportive connection with your therapist allows for open discussions about feelings without fear of judgment.

Self-exploration

The therapy encourages self-discovery, guiding you to be aware of your inner feelings for better self-acceptance.

Handling emotional blocks

Techniques like awareness of physical sensations and internal dialogue help you to confront difficult emotions.

Building self-compassion

PCE-CfD fosters kindness towards yourself, promoting acceptance and boosting self-worth and resilience.

What can I expect from PCE-CfD?

PCE-CfD is a short-term approach for addressing depression and low mood. It focuses on collaboration between you and your therapist, who will support you without judgement. Instead of giving specific techniques, your therapist will help you identify the most important topics to explore.

The process involves understanding your emotions and gaining insights, which can help you connect better with yourself. Feeling upset in sessions can happen, and your therapist will guide you through those feelings. Your commitment to the process is key, and you may find new insights about yourself to discuss in future sessions.

Format of PCE-CfD

The treatment usually includes 4 to 10 sessions, though some may need fewer and others may need more, depending on individual needs. Sessions last 50 minutes and are usually held weekly at the same time. Regular attendance is important for effective therapy.

Your therapist will regularly review your progress with you, providing a chance to reflect on how things are going. We also use questionnaires to help track your development.

Each person has their own needs, and therapy is tailored to you. In the beginning, you’ll work with your therapist to understand your challenges and build trust. Later, you’ll dive deeper into more complex feelings, helping you connect with yourself and the world.

As you start to feel better and make positive changes, we’ll prepare to finish treatment. This will include a recap of what you’ve learned and discussions on how to maintain your progress after the sessions end.
